Hints on travelling with children
Useful ideas and hints for getting things right when you have to travel
with your kids.
| E111 forms require a national insurance number
- children won't have one so you are supposed to put their NHS number
on. This is available on your card you get when you register with
your GP. If you can't find it then your doctors surgery should be
able to help you. |
| If you're travelling abroad with
a baby take a supply of baby milk as it may not be available
in the country you're going to- and changes in milk can affect your
baby. You can also buy sterlised bottled water from places like boots
- it will be handy for travelling. You can also buy ready made baby
milk in cartons. |
| On the plane - ask for bulkhead
seats. Get something for hte baby to suck on takeoff - a bottle or
a dummy will do. Pack a good bag - plenty of nappies and toys to amuse.
Don't forget snacks and drinks for you both. Ask the flight staff
to warm milk. If the flight is quiet stretch your legs and move round
with baby - if this helps to lull them to sleep all the better. |
In cars - make sure that your
car seat is fixed in properly and that is it the right stage for your
child. Make sure you use child safety locks.
Take sick bags, wipes to deal with accidents.
Take a bottle of cold water and cups for yourself and older children.
Use window screens to keep out the sun or hats on children. |
Things to do in car - remember
anything the kids play with in a car could be thrown round in an accident
so don't pack the car with large heavy things which could cause serious
injuries.
Lots of word games, singing and rhymes can be fun. |
Eating out with baby - if
you end up making loads of mess on the table then leave a bigger tip!
Avoid the busy times at restaurants - ask when you book. If there
is nothing on the menu you feel happy about giving your child then
take snacks. A table next to a window can keep a baby amused if there
are fun things to look out.
Take plenty of bibs. If possible feed your baby before you get to
the restaurant, this just makes life easier for you. |
| Check with the hotel or resort
- what equipment you may need to hire in advance. Don't spring an
extra baby on them - they might run out of cots or highchairs! |
